We recently had a customer that is a writer. She had come to me crying say she had lost all her family photos, per poems and a novel that she is working that is suppose to head out to editors soon. Her major problem is that she could only get a part of the novel back from her publisher that she sent a while back. This would put her a month or so behind in her work. the poems she wrote that did not get published for any reasons. She mostly upset about her family photos, she would have to try to get the pictures back from family and friends.
Situations like this can be quite devastating on a person that failed to protect themselves. Our techs found traces of a virus that damaged the partition table. after repairing it, cleaning the drive, and verifying that the data is present and in tact, we backed up the vital data for her and showed her how to do it for herself, and sold her an anti virus to protect herself.
Data wiping
The process of data wiping is permanently removing information on your hard drive. This is more than simply reformatting the drive, and should not be taken lightly. The information on a drive that has been simply deleted or even formatted can be recovered easily by anyone skilled at data recovery.
Data wiping may seem like a service that is only needed by government agencies, or big corporations - but that is not true. The information on your computers, no matter how innocuous it may seem to you, in the wrong hands, could lead to identity theft, the loss of industry secrets, private pictures and videos may be leaked, or many of other frauds.
The procedure itself is done by exposing the drive to alternating magnetic fields which overwrites the original "erased" data with random patterns. The difference between a good wipe, which is 90% unrecoverable, and a DOD wipe is in the number of times the drive is re-written over with random patterns. The more times it is overwritten, the better, but the longer and more costly the process is.
